Simple ideas are easier to understand.

Ideas that are easier to understand can be repeated.

Ideas that are repeated change the world.
- Simon Sinek

I have learned the following paradox in life: the smartest people are able to take the most complex ideas and communicate them simply.

“Are you being authentic?”

What does that even mean?

How about asking, “Tell me what you really think?” It means the same thing. You’re asking someone to express their honest opinion.

I would like to present to you the Trucker Joe Rule. If Trucker Joe would respond to something you say with, “What are you talking ‘bout?!”, there is opportunity to simplify your language so that your message can be understood by your audience.

After all, the more you are understood, the higher the likelihood that your ideas will be repeated.

So, the next time you’re in a job interview, pitching a new idea or chatting over a beer with peers/colleagues, take the following approach: instead of using jargon in attempt to impress, exhibit your intelligence by actually explaining what you mean and think. This is an instance where the old adage “less is more” may actually be incorrect. I believe that more is more as saying a few more words may actually produce better results.

Instead of saying, “it’s quite a synergistic undertaking!” how about, “I believe this is a win-win for both parties.”

Cheers to leading life on purpose!
